Why a Book Guide? Because We've Been There
If you're raising bilingual kids overseas, you already know: finding the right Chinese books is hard. There are thousands of titles out there, but which ones will your child actually want to read? Which ones will they beg you to read again at bedtime?
We've spent years building our family's Chinese library — testing, re-reading, taping torn pages back together, and watching our kids fall in love with characters and stories. This guide is what we wish someone had handed us when we first started. It's organized by age so you can find exactly what fits your child right now, and peek ahead at what's coming next.

Ages 0-3: First Steps into Chinese
At this stage, the goal isn't literacy — it's bonding. You want books with simple, repetitive language, vivid illustrations, and stories rooted in daily routines your child already knows.
Little Chick Growth Series
Author: Noriko Kudo (工藤紀子) | Ages 1-5
This is where we started, and honestly, it's the perfect first Chinese book series. The little chicks go to the supermarket, the amusement park, grandma's house — all the places your toddler already knows and loves. The everyday objects in the illustrations match real life so closely that your child will point and name things on their own. We've even followed the little chick's recipes to make pudding and ice cream soda together. These books turn reading time into real-world play.
Little Penguin Happy Journey Series
Author: Noriko Kudo (工藤紀子) | Ages 1-5
Once your child is comfortable with the Little Chick books, the penguins are the natural next step. Three little penguins set off on their own adventures — taking different modes of transportation, visiting islands and snowy countries, meeting various relatives. This became our go-to series before family trips. There's something about the independence of these little penguins that gives young readers confidence too.
Ages 3-5: The Golden Age of Picture Books
This is when the magic happens. Your child is ready for richer stories, more complex illustrations, and characters they'll remember for years. Stock up — you'll be reading these on repeat.
Noraneko Gundan / Wild Cat Gang (野貓軍團)
Author: Noriko Kudo (工藤紀子) | Ages 3-5
The most charming troublemakers in all of children's literature. The wild cats love to cause mischief, but they always take responsibility in the end. Our little one can't get enough of Wild Cat Gang Takes the Train and Wild Cat Gang Goes for Ice Cream. These books teach accountability without ever feeling preachy.
Bread Thief (麵包小偷)
Author: Keiko Shibata (柴田啓子) | Ages 3-5
Realistic, adorable bread illustrations combined with absurd, hilarious plots. We started visiting Japanese bakeries after reading these, letting our kids connect the book's content with real life. The warm art style keeps children coming back again and again.
Long-Queue Series (大排長龍)
Author: Yumiko Fukuzawa (福澤由美子) | Ages 3-5
Forest animals, family stories, and recipes in every volume — pasta, honey, chocolate. Rich in imagination yet grounded in children's daily lives. A beautiful blend of nature and food that makes every reading feel cozy.
Baum & Kero Series (包姆與凱羅)
Author: Yuka Shimada (島田由佳) | Ages 3-5
Our family's all-time favorite. Truly never gets old. The main storylines are simple, but every single page is packed with hidden details you can cross-reference throughout the book. This is the series that taught our kids what it means to truly love reading.
Little Red Train Series
Author: Kumiko Kaoru (薰久美子) | Ages 3-5
Four books, four seasons, one adorable world. The flip-and-pull mechanisms bring delightful surprises on every page. Simple stories with incredibly charming structure.
Pip and Posy (皮皮與波西)
Author: Camilla Reid & Axel Scheffler | Ages 3-5
Birthdays, toys, snacks — the genuine daily life of childhood. The vivid, humorous illustrations make every child smile with recognition. Bonus: English versions are included in the back for bilingual comparison.
14 Mice Series (14
Author: Kazuo Iwamura (岩村和朗) | Ages 3-5
Exquisite, delicate illustrations where the pictures tell the story more than words. A three-generation mouse family living through the four seasons in the forest. Perfect for nature-loving kids. This is a timeless classic that never feels dated.
Little Squirrels in the Forest
Author: Kazuo Iwamura (岩村和朗) | Ages 3-5
From the same author as 14 Mice, with the same attention to nature's details. The book quality is exceptional — you can feel the care in every page. Beautiful stories of spring, summer, autumn, and winter that we want to treasure forever.
Guli and Gulla (古利與古拉)
Author: Rieko Nakagawa (中川李枝子) | Ages 3-5
A simple, rustic series about two little field mice. Each book ends with the mice hosting forest animals for a big feast. The straightforward charm makes it perfect for younger readers in this age group.
Baby Earth (地球寶寶)
Author: Jimmy Liao (幾米) | Ages 3-5
From Taiwan's beloved picture book author, this short, poetic story about space animals caring for Baby Earth lets children feel overwhelming love. Includes English narration audio — ideal for bilingual families.
The House with 100 Stories (100
Author: Toshio Iwai (岩井俊雄) | Ages 3-5
Fair warning: each book takes 40 minutes to read because the details are endless. Sky, ocean floor, forest, underground, swamp — each uses 100 floors to teach animal habits and science. Highly recommended, but don't pull these out near bedtime.
Brave Little Train (勇敢小火車)
Author: Lai Ma (賴馬) | Ages 3-7
A Taiwanese classic about a little train going from nervousness to courage to confidence — one of several Chinese books that build brave kids. The letter Santa writes to the little train is genuinely moving. "Courage is moving forward despite fear" — a motto for kids and parents alike.
The Best Gift (最棒的禮物)
Author: Lai Ma (賴馬) | Ages 3-7
Rich colors, vivid animals, and a clever way of teaching colors and quantities. Simple plot, but every page is full of surprises. Lai Ma at his best.
Butt Detective Picture Books (屁屁偵探繪本)
Author: Troll | Ages 3-7
The superstar of children's literature. Every page has mystery games and hidden details for kids to discover. Our set has been read until it fell apart, got taped back together, and fell apart again. That's how irresistible Butt Detective is.
Ages 5-7: Bridge Books — From Pictures to Reading
When your child is ready for more text and longer stories, bridge books are the perfect transition. They still have plenty of illustrations, but the plots grow more complex and the reading experience deepens.
Show and Walter (小修與沃特)
Author: Noriko Kudo (工藤紀子) | Ages 3-7
If your family loves the Wild Cat Gang, you'll love this. More complex plots for older kids, but with the same humor and warmth. Show causes trouble, Walter cleans up — and you'll spot familiar faces from Kudo's other books, which gets kids very excited.
Incredible Zorori (怪傑佐羅力)
Author: Yutaka Hara (原裕) | Ages 5-12
The series our kids never tire of. Zorori, Ishishi, and Noshishi embark on wild adventures and pranks that always end in failure — but they never give up. With 80+ volumes and counting, this is the series that turns reluctant readers into bookworms. Tip: buy one or two first to test the waters.
Butt Detective Chapter Books (屁屁偵探讀本)
Author: Troll | Ages 5-12
The next level up from the picture books. More complex plots, more advanced mysteries, two stories per book. Every supporting character is memorable — from the brave koala sister to the cool, elusive Phantom Thief U.
Ages 5-12: Comics and Manga — Learning Without Realizing It
Don't underestimate comics. For bilingual kids, manga-style books in Chinese are often the gateway to independent reading. The visual storytelling keeps them engaged while they absorb vocabulary and cultural knowledge naturally.
Detective Duck (達克比辦案)
Author: Hu Miaofen (胡妙芬) | Ages 5-12
Our whole family's idol. We know every book by heart, and our kids casually quote Detective Duck at the dinner table. Engaging plots, vivid characters, and real natural science woven into every mystery. Start with Rainforest Arsonist for animal lovers, or Fart Alliance for the humor-inclined.
Funny Science King (爆笑科學王)
Author: Shin Taehoon & Na Seungmin | Ages 5-12
The protagonist is a wild kid with a genius brain whose adventures range from inside the human body to outer space. Comedy-first with science education as the backbone — and that's exactly why kids eat it up. The most approachable science series we've found.
Cute Manga Journey to the West
Author: Huishiguang (繪時光) | Ages 5-12
After our son fell in love with Journey to the West, we searched through every children's version available. This one won. The artwork is lively, the storylines are hilarious, and children naturally immerse themselves in classical Chinese literature. Includes character charts for easy reference. We loved it so much we bought the Water Margin and Three Kingdoms versions too.
Building Your Family's Chinese Library
You don't need to buy everything at once. Start with one or two books from your child's age group and see what resonates. Every child is different — some gravitate toward animals, others toward humor, others toward mystery. Follow their lead.
The most important thing isn't which books you choose. It's that reading Chinese together becomes a warm, joyful part of your daily routine. When books are associated with cuddle time, laughter, and connection, the language comes along naturally.
